The Magic Box was an opportunity to make a design proposal for a four thousand square feet and two stories high digital fabrication lab at SCI-Arc.
Completed as a part of a Design Development class with Tom Wiscombe and Herwig Baumgartner, students were encouraged to explore composite material assemblies as a building skin system rather than more traditional methods.
In this case, our group chose fiberglass due to its lightweight properties and its ability to take on complex shapes like boat hulls, camper shells, and even jacuzzis. This choice was also in part influenced by the design of our façade itself, which is partially adapted from a drawing I made in the previous semester along with geometry from another similar drawing made by Shitong Zhang.
I was primarily responsible for constructing the physical model and also helped produce supplemental diagrams/drawings to our final DD set.
